Who we are
With the support of sponsors and friends, Budleigh in Bloom aims to provide attractive floral displays in the town. Volunteers work to create and maintain the various tubs, troughs, flower beds and boats with beautiful arrangements throughout the year.
What we do
Budleigh in Bloom works to keep Budleigh Blooming by providing attractive floral displays throughout the town, the Green and the seafront. With two major replanting sessions a year, we can provide yearlong colour to the town. We have two main fundraising events in a year, the first being the opening day of Gala Week when we have a huge well supported plant sale on the Green and a second sale on August Bank Holiday Monday at the Lions seafront sale. Both events have become well known by local gardeners as an opportunity to buy healthy plants at affordable prices, home grown by many of the volunteers.
History
The beginning of the group is lost in the mists of time, despite enquiries of former volunteers and older residents but in the archive we have certificates from Britain in Bloom dating from the 1970s, so it’s long established. Mostly the certificates are for Exceptional Merit but there are Silver Gilts and 2 Gold Awards! Since 2015 the group no longer participates in Britain in Bloom but we still strive to achieve high standards.
Fortunately, we have some very generous sponsors and donors and have just formed a Friends of Budleigh in Bloom, and for a small minimum donation you can help to keep us in funds.
One of our units is the Fisherman’s Boat located on the beach as you exit Park Lane. Originally called Sloop John B the boat was delivered as storm damage refuse from East Devon Council. The boat was involved in two heroic rescues, recovering a canoe and an inflatable beach ball! After the boat became redundant, it was donated to Budleigh in Bloom, who have for many years filled it with colourful flowers and allowed wild seeding around its base.
