Environmentally friendly Budleigh in Bloom
Bee corridor
We have always been conscious of the environment and are now changing our planting to a more sustainable style, for example, we have just created a Bee Corridor along the seafront path by re-filling the containers with good organic manure and have used a peat free compost on top of that and then planted nectar rich, pollinating perennials also chosen to be drought resistant and salt tolerant. This is quite a lot to ask of a plant, especially along the seafront which suffers from cold harsh salty winds and very hot sunshine, but we have high hopes! This project was generously funded by Rockfish.
Drought tolerance
Budleigh in Bloom is working hard to help drought tolerance of our planting. Including fortifying the soil’s moisture-retention capabilities and encouraging plants to develop deep and robust root systems. Key approaches include being strategic in our plant selection and a transition towards robust, dry-adapted plants, mulching and water harvesting.
Wildlife habitats
We want to help the plants and organisms to thrive and we are constantly looking at ways that we can achieve the correct combination of environmental and physical conditions to help. Careful consideration when ordering plants is given to those which will create an eco-friendly space to support biodiversity.
Plastic free Budleigh
Budleigh in Bloom was very pleased to become Community Allies of Plastic Free Budleigh. Although many of the plants we use are delivered in plastic pots and trays, we make sure that these are reused and/or recycled. Budleigh in Bloom volunteers also participate in the beach/town cleans that Plastic Free Budleigh regularly organise. Plastic is used too widely in all our lives but it can always be reused or disposed of at the nearest recycling centre. Don’t forget to take your own drinks container when you go for tea or coffee in Budleigh as it’s possible to get a discount in some of our coffee shops.
